How to Choose the Right Contact Lens Size?

Aug 5, 2024 HANIIX

When selecting colored contact lenses, three key measurements play a significant role in determining the look and comfort of the lenses: Diameter (DIA), Geometric Diameter (GDIA), and Base Curve (BC). Understanding these terms will help you choose the perfect lenses for your eye shape, size, and desired effect.

What is DIA?

DIA refers to the overall diameter of the contact lens. It directly affects the visual appearance of your eyes when you wear the lenses. A larger DIA generally makes the eyes appear bigger. The typical range for DIA is between 13.8mm and 15mm, with 14mm being a popular choice. A larger DIA enhances the enlarging effect, making the eyes appear more vivid and captivating.

What is GDIA?

GDIA, or Geometric Diameter, represents the area of the lens that is covered by color. This diameter influences how the colored pattern on the lens affects the overall eye appearance. A larger GDIA means more coverage, which can make the eyes look more striking. GDIA usually ranges from 12.5mm to 14mm and is smaller than the DIA.

What is BC (Base Curve)?

BC refers to the curvature of the lens, and it is crucial for comfort and fit. The right BC ensures the lens sits securely on the eye without causing discomfort or shifting. Since each person’s eye shape is unique, selecting the right BC is essential for a secure and comfortable fit. A well-matched BC prevents the lenses from sliding or causing irritation.

Choosing the Right Size for Your Eyes

The right size depends on factors like your eye size, shape, and comfort preferences. Here’s a guide to help you choose:

Eye Size:

  1. If you have smaller eyes, a 13mm - 14mm lens diameter is a good choice.
  2. For those with normal eyes, select a contact lens diameter in the range of 14.00mm to 14.2mm.
  3. For larger eyes, consider 14.5mm lenses for a more noticeable effect.

Eye Shape:

  1. If your eyes are round, 14mm lenses will likely offer the most balanced look.
  2. If your eyes are flatter or more oval-shaped, a slightly larger DIA might be a better fit.

Comfort:

  1. If you’re new to wearing contact lenses, start with a smaller diameter. As you become accustomed to wearing lenses, you can gradually try larger sizes.
  2. Larger diameters can sometimes cause discomfort or even lens shifting if they are too big for your eyes, so always prioritize comfort.
  3. While larger DIA lenses can create more dramatic effects, they may also result in discomfort or vision distortion, especially if they don’t fit your eye size properly. It’s crucial to consider comfort alongside the aesthetic effect.

Safety First:

When buying colored contact lenses, always choose products from reputable, certified brands. Follow the instructions for safe wear and maintenance. Make sure to avoid wearing lenses for extended periods to prevent eye fatigue.
